Reviving my SnapScan 1212

July 14, 2008 | In Development | No Comments

I have an Agfa SnapScan 1212u scanner which I’ve not used for years.  Given it’s been a while I wasn’t too surprised when my XP Pro PC failed to recognise the scanner and refused to communicate. (Actually, I was surprised as it had previously worked with XP).  I was getting the following error in the log file:

++++ PROBLEM DESCRIPTION +++++
++++ SAT ERROR ID: A communication problem occurred.
Open the log file to find out more.
++++++++ERROR STRING: General SCSI error, <<detail>>
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Anyhow, the answer was reasonably simple.  By right-clicking the exe file in the install directory of the Agfa ScanWise application, you can edit the Properties.  One of the tabs is labelled ‘Compatibility’ and there is a tick box to run the application in a mode compatible with previous versions of Windows.  By experimenting with the different versions I found that Windows 2000 mode meant it ran fine.
