Reinstalling SharePoint

January 31, 2007 | In Development | No Comments

We have been experimenting with Microsoft SharePoint at work for use as an intranet. I am very impressed. We had it running nicely on our server and had started populating it with content. At the same time we have installed another server for use with Microsoft Exchange. This was being setup by a third party company. To cut a long story short they turned our SharePoint machine into a domain controller, which removed all the local user accounts and as I found out destroyed our SharePoint :(

Not impressed or amused.

I created a domain level user and set about attempting to reinstall SharePoint. The databases are fine, I just needed to remove the local user and replace with the domain user, all straight forward. The first problem that I didn’t see was that the local user has to be removed from the application pool. That one took ages as the SharePoint configuration wizard kept picking up the local user, and I couldn’t figure out where on earth it was coming from.

I finally managed to get some sense out of SharePoint, but unfortunately it was only a “file not found” error. A quick google revealed it might be the cache that needed clearing as it was trying to load a non-existant assembly. However, at this point I decided that I had wasted enough time and that the pain rightly belonged at the door of those that had created the mess.

I’m still waiting for an answer from them though…

Update: ended up reinstalling Sharepoint and losing the progress to date. Unfortunate, but luckily we did not have too much in there.

I finally found time to finish my other site over at http://www.christianbridge.co.uk and it is now live.
The site allows you to keep todo lists, something which I am using because they are very handy :) The lists are all private and require you to register with an email and password.

I have several improvements planned, such as shareable lists and the addition of descriptions, priorities and ordering.
